IT IS THE DAWN OF THE SECOND AGE

5000 years have passed since the primordial world first was graced by The Five. In the hoary days of the First Age, divine forces shaped the world as the sculptor shapes clay. Barrier ranges, fertile deltas, red mesas, blasted obsidian wastes, temperate valleys, plains of industrious ants, misty rainforests, all rose and fell at the behest of the nascent deities.

And the deities were fivefold: Yen, goddess of luck, discovery, and sacrifice, The Divine Motion, god of the Moon, cycles, and hiddenness, Fracture, force of crag and fissure, quake and hazard, teller of folly and repayer of hubris, Ereo, glass god of masculinity, strength, poetry, crystal, and heroism, and Hanigila Iron-Witch, patron saint of all crafters, goddess of journeys, oaths, and controlled fires.

The first people were The Chorus, a race of feathered theropods who sang hymns to their patron goddess Yen with the resonating chambers in their crested skulls. Under the watchful twin heads of Fatesinger, avatar of Yen, they founded Khal-Thurum, the first city. Soon after came the Moon-folk, who some say were borne down from the lunar sphere upon the silver chariot of the High Priest of the Divine Motion. They settled upon the Holy Mountain in the heart of the mainland and built the High Monastery at its peak. In the same span that saw the birth of the moon men, Khah the Overlord Mask, anointed champion of Ereo, pulled Man and Woman from the entrails of a red mesa roc and commanded them to bedeck themselves in feathers in fashion proper and pleasing to Ereo. Their auguries and oblations calcified a temple acropolis, Retē-Rēta, atop the highest mesa.

But a dire cancer took root in this unformed age: a perfect dome of quartz sprouted from the crystalline wastes in the heart of the southeastern island. It would remain eerily silent for several thousand years, a mute monument promising doom untold. As if preternaturally aware of this looming threat, the hovering sphere that was Fracture’s will personified upon the mortal plane split, bleeding liquid metal upon the black dunes. From this metal rose 10 great beings: the Ferrous; and from the humming obsidian spires to the south marched an army of lesser obsidian servitors: the Igneous.

Some men and women rejected the rigid dogma of Ereo and the stifling ritual of the mesas. They forged west, and in time found they could live in harmony with the great ants of the plains. Among the Ant-Talkers rose a mysterious slate-skinned sorceress: Hanigila, the Iron-Witch, brought into flesh to bring the light of new civilization to the tunnels. The craft-city Zephawetthepo was born, and soon it found itself host to the first center of higher learning: the Ten Thousand Hands and Teeth. Meanwhile, a schism between the gizzard-readers and the bearers of Khah led to the founding of two rival cities of feather-men: Oko’a upon the river delta, and Tama’ata upon the northern coast.

To the southeast, leagues of land turned into plains of premonitions: great shifting furrows plowed through the earth, forming words, phrases, fragments of secrets both known and unknown, both terrible and mundane. The Chorus was not unaware of these plains, and in hoary Khal-Thurum they communed with Yen to gain knowledge of the twists of destiny, honing the art of divination to unsurpassed heights just as they expanded their empire to found the port of Khal-Imraam upon the northwest coast. But even their peerless forewarning could not predict the calamity that followed: the First Murder came as Chorus struck Chorus in anger, forever throwing open the gates of hell.

The cosmic ramifications of this act reverberated throughout the world, and the vibrations woke a terrible force. The quartz dome burst open, releasing the power of Dragons upon the world, an unreasoning force of utter consumption and ruin beholden to no god or man. Reality itself bled, and the island of the dome became a nightmarish hellscape of bloody canopies of briar and thorn suspended across bottomless chasms, of looming mountains bleeding great gouts of ever-burning pitch, and of barren bone-filled wastes.

In the twilight of the First Age, Hanigila Iron-Witch brought forth the Leythai, a race of enormous six-legged tigers, and the Moon-folk emerged from their monastery for the first time in centuries. They had codified once and for all the proper ceremonies for oblation and worship, and their new mission was to spread this knowledge to the people of the river, and to the world beyond.

BUT THE WHEEL TURNS, AND THE FIRST AGE PASSES AS ALL THINGS PASS

Hanigila Iron-Witch heralds the coming of the Second Age in spectacular fashion. Just as her avatar erects a fearsome capital for the Leythai, Malanax, her agents steal the very secrets of glass from the bastion of Ereo, rendering the god of men and heroes impotent. The empire of feathered men wanes, its glass arms and armaments crumbling to disrepair. Strange bands of brigands and barbarians roam the hinterland, stealing children of ant, feather, and chorus alike to raise as their own. While flesh-men wane, metal and stone men wax: Fracture raises a bridge of obsidian pillars to bridge the mainland to the volcanic island to the south, and the Igneous carve a great citadel, Blackglass, into the heart of the volcano.

Meanwhile, on the idyllic tropical island perched between the mainland and the dragon-lands, a mountain covered in eyes sees the death of an age. Some eyes choose to free themselves from the rock, emerging as Stonecrabs - strange crustaceans with singular staring eyes and rocky hides. They awake just in time to see the coming of a new race: The gates to hell have been cast open, and the path from earth to hell has been found. For completeness of the cycle, the reverse path, from hell to earth, must be made determined. Black ships sail to the earth from nameless ports on the moon, carrying terrible Moon Devils, loosed from the underworld, bound in enchanted chains as part of their penance. At the behest of their terrible wardens, they construct a terrible prison-hold of basalt and fire atop the plains of bones.

The Age is yet young. Not the divinations of the Chorus nor the alien whims of the Telling Plains can say whether time will bring fortune and prosperity or annihilation and disparition.

Sleep Paralysis is a phenomenon in which people, either falling asleep or waking up, temporarily experience the inability to move. Scientifically its the transition state between wakefulness and rest characterized by complete muscle atonia (muscle weakness).

I’ve known several people who have had sleep paralysis, who have even made characters who share the same trait. I’ve never suffered from it myself but I find the folklore around it fascinating, because no matter what nation of origin it always has to do with the visitation of a demon or vengeful spirit who either sits on, restrains, or strangles said victim. And so I drew my own little depiction of it, complete with a demon girl puking black stuff on a guy.

I dunno, sue me.
